Making a website on purpose in 2026 when you’re not, like, A Business is, I think, a lot like getting into HAM radio in the 90s. There’s sort of a three-fold process involved of alienating your peers, seeking a community that understands you, and screaming into the void. At the same time, it makes more sense every day. With each passing moment, social media drifts further from the light of God. Nothing is custom, you put your content in the place and they feed it to Grok. Or Gemini. Or whatever. You get into an argument with a sock puppet. Not even Bsky is brave enough to let you add custom html to your profile page.
I see what some folks are doing on Neocities and other places, and it’s honestly inspirational. You create your own space, you build your own toys, and you maybe form some connections that aren’t subject to the whims of a gigantic corporation.
Anyway, I’m Kaz. I’m a software professional, but I’m also one of those Y2K nostalgia luddites who bought an mp3 player during the Biden administration. I’ve never actually messed with WordPress before, so perhaps you’ll forgive me for trying to break it over my knee to look like something old-fashioned as a novelty in the service of also not having to program my own blog. I’m sure I’ll do my own little experiments, too, and this will be one of the first spaces I mention them at.
My intention with the blog is to give a more permanent home to some of my thoughts about websites, computing, retro games, creative pursuits, and other interests of mine, instead of just squawking into Discord and forgetting about it. I hope somebody out there will be interested in what I have to say!
